STM32F4 USB device controller driver

Christer Weinigel

Hi all,

I've updated my USB driver a bit and I hope that I haven't forgotten to
address any of the review comments.

Since I've been testing this on my own STM32F405VG based board that
nobody else has access to I didn't have any good place in Zephyr to show
how to use the USB driver. But I dug around in my boxes of junk and
found two STM32F4 Discovery boards, one with a STM32F407VG on it and
another one with a STM32F401VC. I've added support for all the above
MCUs, and then support for the two Discovery boards. With this in place
I have a patch with my USB driver which then shows how to get a USB
console on both boards.

Some changes to flash_registers.h:

https://gerrit.zephyrproject.org/r/#/c/10612/
https://gerrit.zephyrproject.org/r/#/c/10613/

STM32F401xC, STM32F405xG, STM32F407xG support:

https://gerrit.zephyrproject.org/r/#/c/10306/

Discovery Board definitions:

https://gerrit.zephyrproject.org/r/#/c/10615/
https://gerrit.zephyrproject.org/r/#/c/10616/

Finally the USB stuff:

https://gerrit.zephyrproject.org/r/#/c/10176/7

Please take a look if you have the time.

/Christer

A friendly reminder about the issue types used in Zephyr's Jira projects

Linkmeyer, Mark J <mark.j.linkmeyer@...>

Hi.

It's been noticed recently that Zephyr users and developers are not always creating issues in Jira using the correct issue types. Please take a moment to refresh your memory on the differences between epics, stories, tasks, and bugs by reviewing their descriptions on this Jira help page: https://wiki.zephyrproject.org/view/Jira_Usage_Help. Also, please note that we've recently split out Zephyr SDK and Zephyr Infrastructure into their own separate Jira projects. This is also mentioned in the Jira help page.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks,
Mark

The file system will work provided a disk access layer and flash driver is
implemented for it. Currently these are only implemented for Winbond
flash on the Arduino 101 boards. (susbs/disk/disk_access_flash.c and
drivers/spi_flash_w25qxxdv.c)

Refer to the following header files for the disk_access and flash interfaces
if you would be interested in implementing them.
include/disk_access.h
include/flash.h

2- The file system will be created in SPI flash or SD card?
The current implementation uses Winbond SPI flash on Arduino 101.

I2C compatibility with nrf52

Nicolas Perrenoud <nicolas.perrenoud@...>

Hello,

I tried to use the I2C driver for nRF52. When I compile I have the
followings errors :

/home/nicolas/Desktop/zephyr/drivers/i2c/i2c_nrf5.c:295:5: error:
'NRF_TWI_Type {aka volatile struct <anonymous>}' has no member named 'POWER'

twi->POWER = 0;

/home/nicolas/Desktop/zephyr/drivers/i2c/i2c_nrf5.c:296:5: error:
'NRF_TWI_Type {aka volatile struct <anonymous>}' has no member named 'POWER'

twi->POWER = 1;

The reason is NRF52 TWI module don't have POWER register.

Is there some thinks special to do to compile for NRF52 or is it ok to just
comment these two lines ?

Thanks,

Nicolas

Re: License boilerplate on new files

David Brown

Perhaps it is a little late, but has anyone sought legal council to
determine if the SPDX header is a sufficient license marker? I'm not aware
of any project using it in lieu of actual license text. I thought SPDX was
more intended to avoid the need to parse license comments, and not to be
used instead of them.

Re: sensor.h API semantics and consistency.

wrote:

Hi!

The sensor.h API provides various SENSOR_CHAN_*_ANY channels. The
intent of these, and so far as I can see all current use of these ANY
channels is to represent a the tuple of all of a group of related X,
Y, Z channels. Given that it always refers to *all* of the related
channels rather than any individual one of the related set I wonder
whether it would be less confusing if we rename then as
SENSOR_CHAN_*_ALL or SENSOR_CHAN_*_XYZ ?

Thoughts ?
The initial naming was indeed not the best. Will change it with
SENSOR_CHAN_*_XYZ, as its meaning is evident.

The sensor attributes provide a mechanism to set an OFFSET on any
specific channel. This would appear to be intended as a mechanism to
exploit a hardware capability provided by some devices to configure an
arbitrary measurement offset. We have ~ 2 drivers that support this
attribute in the tree.

Given the current API, an application (or other driver user) who might
want to use the OFFSET mechanism must either:
1) Assume no driver implements OFFSET and post process results itself.
2) Hardwire knowledge that it is using the driver for a specific
device that does, or does not suport the OFFSET feature.
3) Attempt to use OFFSET, detect the ENOTSUP (or other error code used
for the same reason) and fallback to post processing results itself.

Number 1 essentially means the OFFSET mechanism serves no purpose
unless it is ubiquitous.
Number 2 undermines the device abstraction property of a platform OS
Number 3 means increased application logic and to a certain extent
also undermines the device abstraction.

From an applications / device driver users perspective the usability
of the API would be much improved if the OFFSET attribute feature was
either mandatory for a specific channel type across all drivers (or
removed completely). A driver for hardware with no offset feature
can easily emulate the behaviour within the driver itself.

I think we should give consideration to mandating driver support for
OFFSET attributes either for all channels or for specific channels (ie
those where we already have driver support for OFFSET).

I think this argument for consistency applies equally to other attribute
types.

Thoughts ?

I am not sure if enforcing having or not having the OFFSET attribute for
specific channels is necessary the best solution. The OFFSET is used as a
means of manually calibrating sensors that have hardware support for such a
feature. Some sensors may not need calibration, and adding this attribute
to the driver may add little or no benefit to the application.

Also, extending this talk to other attribute types, the answer may not be
as straightforward. SENSOR_ATTR_SAMPLING_FREQUENCY or
SENSOR_ATTR_FULL_SCALE may not be relevant for some drivers (or even have a
fixed value), in which case enforcing support for the attribute doesn't
make sense.

The initial design of the attributes was to offer support for non-generic
sensor features, and not force the drivers to implement any specific
attribute if there is no need for it. So it was though that the application
developers would know beforehand what sensor he will use and what
attributes are supported by it.

So the current attribute model is more close to point 2) which you
mentioned, or an approach similar to 3) if he wants to write a more generic
application.

This talk can be extended to the fact that there is no special rule for
enforcing Kconfig options, as they are not consistent across sensors of the
same type.

The SENSOR_ATTR_CALIB_TARGET, is I believe intended as a mechanism to
allow an application to provide a driver with a "right answer" at the
current point in time, and tell it to calibrate itself such that its
results match the calib target ?

The ATTR_OFFSET mechanism and the ATTR_CALIB_TARGET mechanism have
potential to interact on a channel where both are supported, I think
we should clarify in the API how they are intended to interact.
Notably if an application issues andOFFSET followed by a CALIB_TARGET
for the same channel, we should define how the current offset affects
the behaviour of the CALIB operation. I can imagine two alternatives:
1) CALIB has the effect of zeroing any current OFFSET.
2) Any current OFFSET is added to the CALIB target before calibration
and the current OFFSET remains in force after the CALIB operation.

I think 1) is intuitively more obvious and I can think of no benefits
in choosing 2).

Thoughts?
The point you made for 1) si correct. OFFSET and CALIB shouldn't be used
together as they are a means for manual and automatic calibration, so using
one will invalidate the configurations set by the other.

Re: How to overcome timer delay

Benjamin Walsh <benjamin.walsh@...>

[..snip..]

void main(void)
{
struct k_timer my_timer;

printk("Hello World! %s\n", CONFIG_ARCH);
k_timer_init(&my_timer, timer_handler, NULL);
t = k_uptime_get_32();
while (1) {
k_timer_start(&my_timer, INTERVAL, K_FOREVER);
k_timer_status_sync(&my_timer);
}
}
[..snip..]

So, although increasing it improves the delay, there is a limit. And
for the TICKS_PER_SEC as high as 10000, there is still 100ms delay
over 1000 counts (10%). I think that in practice a mechanism to
compensate the delay to make it a more precise. Is there any better
way?
For your case, that is what I was saying above: if you set the tick rate
to 1000, and you ask for a delay of 1ms, this means at least 1ms, so the
system will wait for 2 ticks (the partial current one + the next one),
so it will wait for around 2ms. That is with the system clock timer,
which has a finite granularity.

If you want more precision, I would look if your board has a second
timer that your application could take ownership of so that you could
program it to fire periodically every 2ms.
Thank you so much for the explanations, Ben.
Well, that was an in-depth explanation of what is happening internally,
but I focused too much on what your code was doing that I kinda
overlooked a better way of doing what you were trying to do. :-/

Instead of stopping and starting the timer with a <duration> of 1ms and
<period> of 0 every iteration, you should just use the periodic feature
of the timer ! If you want it to fire every 2ms, do this:

k_timer_start(&my_timer, 2, 2);
while (1) {
k_timer_status_sync(&my_timer);
}

The <period> value is not aligned on the next tick boundary, since when
the timer is added back to the timeout queue, this happens in the
timer's timeout's expiration handler, which is called when already
aligned on a tick boundary. Thus, the value for the <duration> parameter
of k_timer_start when converted to ticks _will be_ pushed to the next
tick passed the requested duration, while the value for the <period>
parameter when converted to ticks _will not be_ pushed to the next tick.
Look in timer.c:_timer_expiration_handler():

/*
* if the timer is periodic, start it again; don't add _TICK_ALIGN
* since we're already aligned to a tick boundary
*/
if (timer->period > 0) {
key = irq_lock();
_add_timeout(NULL, &timer->timeout, &timer->wait_q,
timer->period);
irq_unlock(key);
}

So, with my example code above, the timer will thus fire in
2.<something> ms the first time, and at fixed interval every 2ms all
subsequent times. If you want the timer to fire within 2m the first
time, call timer start with a <duration> of 1ms instead, like this:

k_timer_start(&my_timer, 1, 2);

Hope this helps,
Ben

hi:
another question, i have seen the wiki you pasted to me, and i found i did not have the flayswatter device, but i have a altera usb-blaster, so, can i use altera usb-blaster instead of the flyswatter to cooperate with the OpenOCD to finish the debug operation on the arduino_due board? thanks for your reply.

Hi,

Are you using Nulceo_f411RE?
If this is the case, this board embeds a ST-LINK debugger/programmer that helps you controling your board with USB.
This is specific to ST developpement boards like Nucleo, Disco or Eval.

If you want to debug on Arduino, please refer to dedicated wiki page:
